HR education started solving chaos in the community

Summary:

Mr. Gajendra Ram. .Her husband used to beat her consuming alcohol but their financial condition was weak. So, he used to threaten her to ask for money from her parent’s home. Manju had already asked for NPR 45,000 from her parent’s home. Due to financial crisis in her parent’s home, they needed that money back. So she shared this to her husband. All of sudden, her husband started beating her until she was severely injured. Ms. Manju was one of participant during HR education workshop conducted in her ward. She knew that all human must be treated equally in regard of their gender and caste. She felt that she was in violence. So, she decided to submit an application to HRAA of Tedakatti VDC. After that, all members of VDC gathered along with Manju and her husband. During conversation, Gajendraaccepted his violence towards his wife and promised not to commit such mistake again. As agreed in the meeting with HRAAmembers, Gajendra used to treat his wife differently now. He shares that, with help of his wife he knew about polices and laws related to gender based violence as well as human rights. Now, they started to participate in community level programs together. He left his alcoholic behaviour. According to follow up done by HRAA members, they haven’t heard any chaos in their family now and they are living happily.

Challenges:

The rights of women to participate fully in the society are somewhat pervasive in all socio-economic and educational classes and cut across cultural and religious barriers.Women who are abused are often afraid or sharingtheir concerns due to socio-cultural pressures and norms. In every country where reliable, large-scale studies have been conducted, results indicate that between 16 and 52 percent of women have been assaulted by an intimate partner. Similar situation prevails in Terai region of Nepal. Manju has been the victim of domestic violence leaded by alcoholic behaviourof her husband. If she didn’t know that there is law with regard to domestic violence, she would tolerate everything by her husband thinking it as her fate.

Initiative:

But, after participating in HR education program she got to know about various human rights laws and regulations. She got to know about HRAA during that program that brought her confidence to complain her situation with them. The HRAA of Tedakatti VDC took initiation to inform Manju and her husband that whatever her husband had been doing was violence and if he didn’t stop his behaviour; he would be punishable by law.

Results:

After HRAA took initiation in informing Gajendra that whatever he had been doing was violence. With their mutual understanding, Gajendra quit his alcoholic behaviour and has been treating his wife properly. Gajendra got to know about polices and laws related to gender based violence as well as human rights through his wife. Now, they started to participate in community level programs together. He left his alcoholic behaviour. According to follow up done by HRAA members, they haven’t heard any chaos in their family now and they have been living happily.
