Dalit community can enter Brahammai Temple in Bara

Summary:

Brahammai Temple is very popular temple in Tedakatti VDC, Bara. In the month of Asoj, there used to have Special Puja in temple but Dalit community people were not allowed to enter to temple. They were allowed to stand outside temple for worshipping and taking Prasad from priest. After AAWAZ project activities have been started at community level; people have been becoming more sensitized on these issues. HR education workshop where community people including non-Dalit community people were given education regarding laws, policies related to CBD&U. Along with that, solidarity dialogue was organized and local stakeholders made commitment to stand against CBD&U. Changes in people’s perception and practice started changing gradually. From 24thAsoj, 2073, people form Dalit community started worshipping in Brahammai Temple entering inside. Priest didn’t discriminate them in terms of their caste. Dalit communities are happy because of this positive change. Dalit and non-Dalit started working together in the community.

Challenges:

The people Dalit community have been deprived of entering into temple from decades. They were afraid of entering into temple and following same trend as of their forefathers. Perception of non-Dalit and societal differences has been pushing discriminatory culture forward. Brahammai temple was one of the temples; situated in Tedakatti VDC, Bara; where Dalit were not allowed to enter. They used to offer Puja from outside of the temple and priest used to give them Prasad outside of the temple.

Initiative:
